When December rolls around, I always find myself visiting York to get into the festive spirit. Walking around the quaint streets lit up by Christmas decorations whilst buying gifts for loved ones, is probably my favourite activity. One thing is for certain, all of that shopping works up an appetite and there is no better place to indulge it than ASK Italian York at The Grand Assembly rooms!ASK Italian York creates delicious and inventive dishes, served in an incredible historic building. Located on Blake Street, The Grand Assembly Rooms with their Palladian architecture, were built around 300 years ago. The stunning interior decor boasts imposing chandeliers and marble columns lining the room; it creates a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy your meal.
During the festive season, the interior is made all the more magical with the addition of tasteful Christmas decor. From a classic tree to darling garlands adorning the bar. This is the perfect backdrop to enjoy a celebratory meal with friends or family.
Since my friend and I were getting into the spirit of Christmas, we opted to go for the Super Festivo menu which offers three courses, served with a glass of Prosecco and limoncello to finish.
Whilst browsing the menu we were served a glass of lemonade, which was a lovely touch. The Super Festivo menu offers a wide range of dishes to choose from, which made the task all the more difficult because they all sounded amazing. For the starters, my friend and I decided to share two dishes so we could try both, we went for the Butterfly King Prawns and the Festive Cheese Fondu.
I have to say, they were both great choices. The Prawns were served with a delicious roasted garlic bread and were full of flavour.
The Festive Cheese Fondu was a real treat for any cheese lover. The rich fondu had a baked garlic and herb crumb and was accompanied by dough balls.
For the main course, I decided upon the Meatballs Picante Grande – they were to die for! Seriously, the meatballs in spicy tomato sauce served with mozzarella and marscarpone was the perfect combination.
My friend ordered the Sea Bass Alforno, which is served in a white wine sauce and a side of vegetables, it looked divine.
Although we were both thoroughly full from the delicious meal, one always has to save room for dessert, right? We could not resist getting the Snowball Gnocchi – it sounded amazing and certainly lived up to expectations.
As the menu said they were ‘snow good’! You are served gnocchi filled with Nutella and a chocolate dipping sauce with white chocolate curls to add on top. Truly a treat for any sweet tooth!
The meal was completed by a Limoncello digestivo – a great way to end an Italian twist on a festive lunch.
ASK Italian is one of York’s best, affordable restaurants located in an incredible building that elevates your dining experience.
As you can imagine, the during this period of the year restaurants are incredibly busy and I’d highly recommend booking ahead for a table – it will save you queuing for a long time. You can find ASK Italian York and many other restaurants offering Festive Dining on Bookatable.
This post is in collaboration with Bookatable. As always, all opinions and photography are my own. Bon apetit!

My husband (then fiance) and I were in YORK about 3 years ago right after Christmas (for New Years) and I won’t lie, we were insanely bored because EVERYTHING was closed!!!!!

That’s a shame and super weird because nothing really closes in the UK. Most stores, restaurants etc are open after Boxing day 🙂
